Laboratory required to testify in DOJ case of a macaque smuggling ring.
Charles River Laboratories stated that it received a subpoena from the Department of Justice (DOJ), requiring them to testify in an investigation into the illegal trafficking of long-tailed macaques. This endangered species of primate is native to Southeast Asia and can only be brought to the United States with special import permits.
The Justice Department has been tracking a Cambodia-based macaque trafficking organization since last year and made a number of charges against members of that trafficking ring in November 2022. Many high-profile laboratories use “non-human primates” in their biomedical research, considering them essential test subjects in the final stages of biomedical testing. After November’s indictments, Charles River Laboratories voluntarily suspended shipments of non-human primates from Cambodia until the macaque trafficking case is closed.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Justice Department investigators as they seek to prevent trafficking in endangered species.
- For Attorney General Garland to seek God’s guidance as he heads the DOJ.
